Hygiene

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss worldwide and can be prevented. At Swallow Dental Clinic we believe ensuring your teeth and gums stay healthy is the most important aspect of dentistry.

Over a period of time, plaque can harden and become difficult to remove so we recommend visiting our oral hygienists at Swallow Dental Clinic at least twice a year for a full scale and polish treatment. Our hygienists provide expert advice and will give you an individual hygiene programme to follow. This will include the best technique on how to brush your teeth and the type of toothbrush and toothpaste that is most suitable for you.

What is gum disease?

The term gum (or periodontal) disease, describes bacterial growth and production of factors that gradually destroy the tissue which surrounds and supports the teeth. The word “Periodontal” means “around the tooth.”

Gum disease begins with plaque, which is always forming on your teeth, without you even knowing about it. If the plaque is not removed daily it will form tartar (or calculus) which is the breeding ground for the germs which lead to gum disease.

Anyone can be susceptible to gum disease, at any age. It can lead to you losing your teeth because this disease attacks the gums, as well as the bone, which are the foundation in which your teeth rest. Your teeth will become loose and eventually fall out as the bone dissolves away from around your teeth.

Gum diseases are classified according to severity. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of gum disease which only affects the gums. Gingivitis can lead to more serious destructive forms of gum disease called periodontitis.
